Canada's Education Cost

Type of Certification

Certificate/ Diploma/ UG Diploma Qualification: A programme which is usually one to three years in duration, and is offered at colleges. Undergraduate/bachelor’s degrees qualification: A programme awarded by a university after four years of full-time study, and leads to graduate level studies. Post Graduate Diploma / Graduate Certificate: One to two year study after bachelor studies. Masters /Post Graduate degrees qualification: A pre-requisite to participate in graduate studies is an undergraduate / bachelors degree (4 years). It comprises of minimum two years of full time studies based on either course work or thesis. Doctoral / Ph D qualification: A minimum of 2 to 5 year full time study under supervision that involves research.

Universities

Canadian universities are largely public funded organisations. They offer consistently high quality education at lower tuition fee for international students. They offer a broad range of courses and degrees from undergraduate to doctorate and also few certificate and professional degrees. University Colleges: They offer students a choice of either more practical-oriented college diplomas and certificates or academic oriented university degree programmes. They are distinguished by their strong campus environments, strong student support services and small classes. They also offer diploma programmes/combined degree and university transfer programmes.

Community colleges and technical institutes

More vocational-related curriculum is offered at these institutions. They have small size classes with off-campus course offerings. The interactive teaching style incorporating greater ratio of laboratory space to classroom space. The uniqueness of Canadian colleges lies in the combination of employer-centred curriculum. These institutes have the primary function of responding to the training needs of industry, business and public service sectors. Most of these institutes offer diplomas and certificates rather than degrees.

Technical/ Career Colleges

This is a privately owned and operated school. The main objective of preparing students for the job market after a short period of instruction. The emphasis at career colleges is on practical skills over a broad range of programmes. They specialize in such areas as computers, business and secretarial skills. These institutes are provincially approved and regulated, ensuring that programmes quality and standards are maintained.

STUDENT PARTNER PROGRAM (SPP)

The Student Partners Program (SPP) is a joint pilot project between Canadian visa offices in India Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). Student Applications under this SPP program receive quick processing and a fair decision based on the documents submitted by the students. A student visa application refused under SPP once is not eligible to reapply under SPP.

QUALIFYING EXAMS & SCHOLARSHIPS IN CANADA

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of individuals who want to study or work in countries where English is used as a language of communication. IELTS exam is conducted worldwide by British Council, UK and IDP, Australia. This test is available in two formats academic and general. Academic IELTS -If applying for higher education or professional registration in English speaking countries. General IELTS - If migrating to Australia, Canada or the UK. One can appear for IELTS test as many times as required. It is conducted 4 -5 times every month. The test score is valid for 2 years.
Exam Pattern i) Reading Section 3 Sections, Time Allotted - 20 mins. for each section. ii) Listening Section 4 Section, Time Allotted - 30 mins. iii) Speaking Section Time Allotted - 11 to 15 mins iv) Writing Section 2 Sections, Time Allotted - 20 mins for 1 section and 40 mins for other section Total Time 2 hours, 45 minutes Nature of Exam Paper Based Test (PBT) Total Scores IELTS is out of 9.0 bands. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a test for English aptitude at any level for foreign universities. Administered by non-profit organization ETS (Educational Testing Service), TOEFL measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. iBT stands for Internet Based Test which is the most common form of TOEFL conducted worldwide. Students who want to apply for higher education overseas, scholarship and certification candidates, students and workers applying for visa can take TOEFL test any number of times not more than once in a 12-day period.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is the most commonly required admission test for graduate and business schools in the US. GRE is administered by a non-profit organization ETS (Educational Testing Service). It is used to assess an individual's critical thinking, analytical writing, quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning abilities. Prospective graduate or business school applicants can take GRE once in every 21 days for up to five times within any continuous 12-month period.
